Mr. Thomas Athisayaraj is a consultant colorectal, general, and laparoscopic surgeon in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk with over 20 years of experience in the health service. He currently works as a full-time consultant specializing in Laparoscopic colorectal and general surgery at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds. He also practices in St Edmunds Circle Health Group Hospital.

Mr. Thomas Athisayaraj's special interests are laparoscopic (keyhole) colon and rectal cancer operations, colonoscopy, Keyhole surgery for gallstones (laparoscopic cholecystectomy), Hernia operations (open and keyhole), Surgery for benign anorectal conditions like hemorrhoids, Anal fissure and Fistula in ano, Surgery for rectal prolapse (Delormes and Altemeier procedure) and other common general surgical procedures

Mr. Thomas Athisayaraj has a strong surgical background having graduated from The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University in India in 2001. He did his basic surgical training in Chennai - India, which led to the award of Diplomate of the National Board of Examination (DNB), New Delhi in General Surgery. Mr Athisayaraj then moved to the UK in 2005 to pursue specialist surgical training in various subspecialties. During his specialist training, he has worked in various NHS hospitals in the West Midlands, Wales, London, and East of England and he is in the specialist register.

He then went on to obtain Master of Surgery (ChM) from the University of Edinburgh and completed FRCS (General surgery) with colorectal interest from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh Mr Thomas Athisayaraj is also a JAG-certified endoscopist and endoscopy trainer. He is a provider and trainer for colonoscopies, Gastroscopies, and flexible sigmoidoscopies. He has a special interest in endoscopy and has performed more than 5000 scopes. He carries out banding of haemorrhoids and therapeutic lower GI procedures (polypectomies and EMRs)

Mr Thomas Athisayaraj has keen interest in training and teaching, and regularly conduct training programmes in training young surgeons in laparoscopic colorectal & General surgery and endoscopy. He has published various peer-reviewed research papers and has presented his work in various international and national conferences. Outside of work, Mr. Thomas Athisayaraj enjoys travelling in his spare time with his family to pursue his passion for photography which he feels has helped him appreciate small things and to view them from a different perspective. He also enjoys gardening and tending to the birds and varied wild life around his house in rural Suffolk.
